Nestled in the northeast corner of the Quimper Peninsula, the harbour city of Port Townsend is the seat of Jefferson County in Washington, USA. It is spread over an area of 24.5 sq km and has a population of around 10,000.
Officially settled in 1851, the city was originally named as ‘Port Townshend’ by Captain George Vancouver for his friend, the Marquis of Townshend, in 1792.
Port Townsend has a maritime climate. Summers are moderate with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 12°C. Winters are mild with temperatures varying from 3°C to 7°C.
Port Townsend serves as a base for people exploring the Olympic National Park and as a port for the Washington State Ferry. Visitors can indulge in adventure activities in the mountains or simply marvel at the scenic marine beauty in a boat ride. The uptown area is lined with historical Victorian buildings and has a vibrant cultural environment.
