Saint Michaels is a town, placed in Talbot County. The population of the town is 1,193. It has gained its name from the Episcopal Parish, which was established, in the year 1677.
The town is of historic importance, as during the War of 1812, a fleet under the command of Admiral George Cockburn moved up the Chesapeake Bay, which was the shipyards of Saint Michaels, an important target.
In the night Battle of St. Michaels the British attacked the town, but failed to destroy the shipyards, because of the town's deception of dimming the lights and hanging lanterns in the trees beyond the town. Hence the town is popular as “the town that fooled the British".
