Salt Lake City, host of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, is the capital of the state of Utah, United States and the seat of Salt Lake County.  It is located near the Grand Canyon in a beautiful valley beneath the Wasatch Mountains and is home to approximately 200,000 inhabitants.
The famous Great Salt Lake, which gave the city its name, is located around 24 km from the city.
The city was founded in 18 47 by the religious leader Brigham Young and his group of Mormon Pioneers. Since, the city has evolved into a major religious, commercial as well as tourist centre. The city is the home of the international headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Mormon Tabernacle choir which is famous worldwide.
It is extremely well connected to the rest of the country and is in fact considered to be ‘The Crossroads of the West’.
The city is characterised by a semi-arid climate. The climate of the city is generally dry, although the wetter region of the Wasatch provides for any deficient water supply. Temperatures in summer run between 20°C–30°C, while winter can see temperatures falling below –7°C.
During summers, days are hot and dry, while the nights are relatively cooler. Winters are cold, with intermittent snowfall. The city receives the maximum rainfall in March.

Overall Guide : Salt Lake City is home to the Timpanogos Cave, which is a national monument in the Wasatch Mountains and offers a spectacular view of the American Fork Canyon. For another striking peek at the city, you can go to the... more Red Butte Gardens in the foothills, which has fountains, waterfalls and a colourful display of flora. You can also take a train ride on the Historic Heber Valley railroad through Provo Canyon. Another national place of interest is Trolley Square, with its bustling marketplace and the old Mormon Temple. For a laugh, head to the Off Broadway Theatre downtown which has hilarious Broadway spoofs and comedy shows. Descend the mountain and visit the Cathedral of the Madeleine, which is the largest Catholic Church in Salt Lake. Those with an interest in culture and history can visit the Utah museum of Fine Arts, or the Salt Lake Art Centre. The Utah State Capitol building is a beautiful structure not to be missed. Salt Lake City, set in picturesque surroundings, offers an array of recreational options. It is known for its outdoor sports and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. The nearby mountains provide for activities such as biking, hiking and camping. The Great Salt Lake provides a unique swimming experience due to its high salinity. Boating and sailing can also be undertaken on one of the lakes here. The rivers in the area offer white water rafting and canoeing. Alta, Snowbird and Solitude are fantastic ski resorts that provide facilities for numerous winter sports. Other historic sights include the Beehive House and Fort Douglas. Also visit Brewvies Cinema Pub and Capitol Theatre for excellent entertainment opportunities.
