Overall Guide : Antwerp’s culture, history, nightlife and world-class shopping make it a many-layered city. In addition to the beautiful 16th and 17th century architecture, the city also has outstanding museums, galleries and parks. The Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Museum for... more Fine Arts) has a collection of  the major Dutch masters. The Plantin-Moretus Museum is the house of the printers Christoffel Plantijn and Jan Moretus. The Cathedral of Our Lady (begun in the 14th century) has three works by Rubens. The Church of St James, even more decorative than the cathedral, houses the tomb of Rubens and the baroque interior of The Church of St Paul is remarkable. Central Station has a baroque exterior, a massive glass dome and an interior decorated in gilt and marble. The oldest skyscraper in Europe, built in 1932, (The Boerentoren) can be found in Antwerp. Antwerp is a city with vivacity, magnificent architecture, artworks, fashionable shops, including the diamond district, and pubs and restaurants serving superb Belgian and multicultural food.

Overall Guide : The city of Antwerp  is in the region of Flanders in northern Belgium. It lies on the right bank of the river Scheldt,  linked to the sea, and has historically been an important city in terms of economic activity and... more culture. Antwerp's port, the second  largest in Europe, has high volumes of shipping. It is also ‘the diamond capital of the world’. The 500,000 cosmopolitan inhabitants call their city ‘The Metropolis’. In the 16th century (‘the golden era’) Antwerp was reknowned for its wealthy merchant  citizens, whose splendid houses have been maintained throughout the city. In the 17th century Antwerp had a fine artistic tradition, based on the school of Rubens, Van Dyck, and many others.
