Munster, located in the western part of Germany, has a population of approximately 270,000 inhabitants. Air raids during World War II, almost entirely destroyed the city’s original centre, which has now been rebuilt to its original glory.
Munster’s proximity to the North Sea gives it a maritime climate. Summertime temperatures are moderate, ranging between 16°C and 22°C. January is the coldest month with the average temperature at 1.6°C.
The medieval city of Munster was built around the church and the fort in the area. Soon, a school was founded and a marketplace came up. Eventually, Munster was established. All through the Middle Ages, the area was troubled by one war after another. In World War II, it was an important military headquarter, and thus, it bore the brunt of many an attack by the Allied Forces.

Overall Guide : The Prinzipalt Market, the market square of the old medieval town, is flanked by the town hall and St. Lambert’s Church. In the Middle Ages, the corpses of three Anabaptists were put in cages that were displayed on the tower... more of this church. The Cathedral of Saint Paul is well known for its ornate astronomical clock. Zwinger, a fortress which served as a prison, and Schloss, the royal residence of the ruling archbishops, warrant a visit for their beautiful architecture. Various museums like the Munster City Museum, showcasing the history of the city, and the Pablo Picasso Museum of Graphic Art, the only one of its kind in the world, can be found in the old town. Munster is surrounded by a mostly flat and grassy terrain. This area is dotted with numerous beautiful castles and churches which can be easily explored even on bicycles. In fact, the popularity of bicycles in this area has earned Munster the title of ‘Bicycle Capital’.
