Salerno is a small town in the region of Campania in Southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Salerno. It is located on the gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Salerno is the main town in the Costiera Amalfitana (the "amalfi coast" on the Tyrrhenian). Salerno has been the capital of the government of the south (allied forces) for a few months during the Second World War in 1994.
The city covers an area of 22.8 sq miles and is situated just 4 meters above sea level. The city shares a Mediterranean climate with a relatively dry summer (23º) and chilly winters (8ºc). The city sees 1,000 mm of rainy yearly. The strong winds from the mountains make the city windy as well as one of the sunniest towns in Italy.
