Today, tourism is the base of the economy along with agriculture. The local population is mainly of Arab-Berber origins.

The city hosts the World Sacred Music Festival, a week-long celebration of sacred musical traditions, where famous performers are juxtaposed with more obscure musical genres. The Boujeloud Gardens is the perfect picnic site, with an open air cafe and greenery all around. The Evening Roost at Fez is a spectacular sight for bird watching. The new town at Fez is dotted with little cafes and eateries, where you can lounge and relax and enjoy the local cuisine.
