Info about Meknes

Area:
94 km2
Elevation:
552 m
Overview

Meknes is a city in northern Morocco.  A historical city, it is home to an estimated 536,322 people.
The city experiences a continental climate. Summers get very hot, especially from July-August, with temperatures dropping at night. Due to the heat, most sites are closed at noon and reopen only after 2 pm.
The town was established when a Berber tribe called the Miknasa settled around an 8th century fortress. The city enjoyed a golden age as the imperial capital of the Moulay Ismail Sultanate.
Today Meknes is a commercial centre for agricultural products, fine embroidery and carpets. The local population is mainly of Berber origin.

Overall Guide : Meknès was once the heart of the Moroccan sultanate and it is now the most imperial of the country's cities. Its impressive buildings reflect its heritage and give you a good idea of Moroccan life in medieval times. Meknès is certainly... more quieter, smaller and more hassle-free than Fès and Marrakesh and that makes it a nice place to hang around. It is definitely worth staying for a couple of days, which should include a visit to the unique Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and a day trip to the roman ruins of Volubilis.
Not to be missed Lhdim square , Volibulis

Overall Guide : A taste of the real Morocco. Not commercialised, yet has evolved gently over the past twenty years. The medina is small and easily accessible, and the new town has great coffee shops and clothing boutiques on the tree lined boulevards.... more Also less than one hour from the mountains, and also from FEZ.
Not to be missed Place El Hidim , Tombeau Moulay Ismael , The medina
