Manila, capital of the Philippines and one of the great cities of South East Asia, is built on the edge of the wonderful natural harbour of Manila Bay in the central island of Luzon, the largest and northernmost Philippine island.
It is the country's major commercial, financial and educational centre and the heart of the country's national government.
Founded by the Spanish in 1571 by López de Legaspi and developed mainly by Spanish missionaries, Manila remained under Spanish control until the Spanish-American War in 1898, when it was seized by U.S. forces three months after the battle of Manila Bay.
Manila was held by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945 during World War II and unfortunately much of the city was destroyed.
Since then however the city has expanded widely on both sides of the Pasig River, absorbing a number of surrounding towns and smaller cities.
Today, Manila is a lively metropolis with a delightful mix of old and new: age-old traditions and modern-day attractions; centuries-old buildings and gleaming high-rise structures; quaint street stalls and modern shopping malls; stately museums and discotheques and bars.

Overall Guide : Manila is a blend of cultures and flavours that offers an endless serving of places to see, sights to behold, and unforgettable experiences. Right in the heart of Manila is found the “Walled City” – Intramuros, built by... more the Spanish as a fort in 1590. At the centre of Intramuros you can admire the impressive Manila Cathedral, the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Manila. Then there is San Agustin Church, the oldest stone church in Manila and one of the four Philippine Baroque Churches inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Moreover, Inframuros contains something as 15 churches and six monasteries. Malacañang Palace, the official residence of the Philippine President, stands regally on the banks of the Pasig River. If you love culture, you can’t miss a visit to the Casa Manila Museum, the Museum of the Pilipino People and the Cultural Centre of the Philippines. There is, as in most SE Asian cities, a spectacular Chinatown in the district of Bimondo. Other attractions in the city include the Rizal Park, Casa Manila, Bahay Tsinoy, Plaza San Luis and the Coconut Palace.

Overall Guide : The development of Manila is good but expansion should be even more more progressive evenly on the suburbs, like Marikina, Rizal (San Mateo}, Quezon City, Caloocan, and not mention Makati which is Too Progressive.
