Info about Inverness

Area:
161 km2
Overview

Inverness is located in the north of Scotland, near the mouth of the River Ness. This town of approximately 55,000 inhabitants is known as the ‘Capital of the Highlands’ as it is the only large town in this region of Scotland.
Inverness enjoys a pleasant climate but summer is the best time to visit: daylight lasts for long periods and the weather is pleasant. During winters, the average temperature is 5°C, but the region may have the occasional snowfall and the wind chill can be severe.
Inverness’ strategic location at the mouth of an important river made it a coveted region from the early days.  Different areas of the town were repeatedly fortified. Today, it is an important commercial town on which the other highland villages depend. It is also one of the fastest growing towns in Europe.

Overall Guide : Inverness has monuments dating back to the Bronze Age. The oldest sites are the Stones of Clava, a group of standing stones from the prehistoric times, and a 2,000-year-old fort at Craig Phadrig. Take a walking tour of ‘Churches along... more the River’, which is a self-tour marked on a map; it takes you through nine churches of different traditions, histories and styles of architecture. There are several islands in the River Ness which can be easily explored on foot along the city riverside. The seaside town of Nairn is in the vicinity and is popular with visitors for its long stretches of beaches and clean coasts. The beautiful and historic town of Beauly is also in the vicinity; it is known for its ancient priory and speciality shops. Loch Ness is not very close to Inverness but is well-worth a visit for the majestic ruins of Urquhart Castle and the Loch Ness Visitor Centre to learn more about the legend of Nessie the Monster.

Overall Guide : Inverness is a great place as it is the Capital of the Highlands. The Highlands of Scotland is a stunning destination with mountains, glens, great rivers, lochs(lakes) castles, battle sites and much more. Inverness is ideally placed to visit them... more all. It has become the Capital because of its position, all roads radiate out to every part of the Highlands. Inverness itself has great restaurants, a wonderful theatre, cinema, great shops, nature reserves and the River Ness flowing through the centre. It has its own airport(Dalcross) and a main line railway station. It is a thriving city surrounded by wonderful countryside with the largest fort in Europe(Fort George) Macbeth's Cawdor Castle and Culloden Battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie was finally defeated. One trip is never enough there is so much to do and I havn't even mentioned Loch Ness!!
Not to be missed Glen Strathfarrar , Applecross Pass , Dinner in one of the riverside restaurants

Overall Guide : Great city with very clean environment. Great restaurants, great theatre and great pubs. Historical sites all round the city but with a buzz of modern relaxes living. River Ness flows through the middle of the city enabling people to fish... more for salmon in the city centre. Great venues for entertainment. Most of all the people of Inverness are friendly, helpful and relaxed. Just a great place to live.
Not to be missed Cawdor Castle , Fort George , Culloden Battlefield
