Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, and today is home to 1.35 million people, over a third of the entire Uruguayan population. Originally founded in 1726, the city was heavily influenced by Britain from the early 19th century to the early 20th century, who used it as a means of circumventing commercial control by Argentina and Brazil. Between 1838 and 1851, Argentina’s dictator of the time, Juan Manuel de Rosas, repeatedly besieged the city with the aim of winning control of the region.
Situated on the northern mouth of the Plata River estuary, Montevideo is Uruguay’s largest port. A period of economic prosperity in the late 19th century drew many immigrants from Europe, however military dictatorship in the mid-20th century led to an economic decline, the effects of which may still be seen today. During this period, many rural poor flooded the city, however this trend has slowed as the country has entered a period of economic recovery, with stronger regional trade ties leading to renewed agricultural development.

Overall Guide : Montevideo is intersected by one of the most impressive and beautiful avenues of South America, 18 de Julio, which extends from the Plaza Indipendencia to the neighbourhood of Cordón. The Mercado del Puerto, which is housed in ... Leggi tutto a converted train station, is a great place to sample local food and drink, with bars and grills lining this ornate building from corner to corner. The interesting history of the Uruguayan cowboy, or guacho, is explained in the Museo de Guacho y de la Moneda, in the building of the Banco de la Republica. The Old City, or Ciudad Vieja, is currently being given a face-lift and is well worth a visit for the charming colonial plazas and streets. The city also boasts nine sandy beaches, great for sunbathing, and while the ocean is muddy thanks to the nearby outlet of the River Plata, it is clean and safe to bathe in. Nearby points of interest include the Punta del Este, a long peninsular which extends to the southernmost point of the country, and is a popular holiday destination during the summer months, December to January; Colonia del Sacramento, a small town with a rich colonial history including the oldest church and the only bull ring in Uruguay, as well as a fortress and contraband port which are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites; and of course the famous Guacho Country, where tourists can spend time on one of the many ranches, exploring the countryside on horseback.

Overall Guide : I appreciate the bus service. It is very good. The buses are new, clean, on time. The roads and streets in general are excellent. I feel safe in Montevideo. I have been here for 2 1/2 years and have not ... Leggi tutto had any acquaintance with crime. Uruguay is getting more expensive. When I came prices were lower. Now I have to be more careful with my food budget especially.

Overall Guide : VERY NICE AND SAFE, GOOD FOOD, A LOT OF SPORTS BARS, GOOD BEACHES. Punta Del Este is very impressive, very good in customer service. Clean beaches and good hotels.

Overall Guide : Very Good, and very friendly people. Lovely enviroment and down to earth prices. They know how to have fun !! Incredible Beautiful International Airport. Good Roads and good internet coverage. Certanly will go again. Oh!, Lovely beaches.
