Charleroi is considered as the largest city and also the municipality of Wallonia which is located in the province of Hainaut in Belgium. As on 1st January 2008, the total population of the city was 201,593. This is a metropolitan area which includes the outer commuter zone and covers an area of 1,462 kilometes and has a total population of 522,522 as of on 1st January 2008 and this makes this city the 5fth most populated city in Belgium.
There are industrial area, glassworks, iron and steel glassworks and chemicals and electrical engineering. The city, Charleroi is in the center of a vast coal basin which is known as Pays noir. The city is also known for is publishing industry.
The history of Charleroi starts in 1666. The municipality of the city is situated on both banks of the river Sambre and which is marked by the industrial activities, mainly steel industry and coal mining. Some of the old buildings are worth visiting which were factories that got closed in 1950s.

Overall Guide : Many of the public buildings, villas and temples were built in Charleroi in the Roman period. There are many interesting places to see in Charleroi. The city is also home to many museums like fine arts, photography and glass. This city is known by the name Heart of the Black Country as the city is named for its coal mines. This city shares the title of capital of the Belgian comics with Brussels. While traveling to this city, one has to know that this city is divided into 2 parts, lower town and upper town. One can visit some of the nicest places in the city like the Charleroi Sud station, the neoclassical St Anthony Church and the Passage de la gallery in Belgium. This gallery was one of the first shopping gallery in the city and houses a second hand bookshops and a big interior decoration shop at present.
