Oostende, a beautiful city at the North Sea, is a major Belgian metropolis with a population of around 90,000 inhabitants. Characterised by a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters, it rains all round the year in this historical city.
The earliest settlements in Oostende date as far back as the thirteenth century. Since, fishing has been the main occupation. The city of Oostende has evolved from being a small, inconspicuous town to a major economic and trading centre of Belgium.
As the city acquired the attention of the Belgian royalty, it witnessed the construction of various villas and monuments to please the aristocracy. The place still has numerous streets and parks named after the members of the royal family, and this has earned the place the title of the ‘Queen of the Belgian sea-side resorts’.
