Lille

Lille lies in the northernmost part of France, near the Belgian border. It has 226,000 inhabitants.
Though, Lille has a pleasant climate almost all the year round, June to September is the best time to visit; the average temperature is 20°C. Rainfall is spread out evenly across the year although it is low. It does not get too cold in winter, but the wind chill factor can be quite high.
The city of Lille has been built over what was originally marshland. During the Middle Ages, it grew in stature largely due to the flourishing textiles and weaving industry. Though the city was fortified, it was captured by Spain, France and Austria, over and over again.
Today, Lille is an established industrial centre and was titled the European capital of culture in 2004.

Overall Guide : La Piscine Musée d'Art et d'Industrie is unique because it has been built in a swimming pool and displays works of fine-art, art and sculpture. The Fine Arts museum houses statues from the eighteenth century, archaeological findings and works of ... Leggi tutto renowned artists. The Museum of Modern Art is situated in a sculpture park and houses the works of Picasso among others. La Braderie is Europe’s largest flea market and is held during the first weekend in September. Almost all of the city’s streets are covered with stalls; music and other street entertainment take over the entire city. Stroll down the cobble-stoned Vieux Lille (old town) with its gourmet restaurants and designer boutiques, or browse through the 8-storey bookstore, Le Furet du Nord, the largest bookstore in Europe. The beautiful coastal area of Cap Blanc-Nez with its towering cliffs and several towns in Belgium are a day’s trip from Lille.
