Split, in Croatia, is the largest and most important city in Dalmatia. It is the second largest Croatian city and the administrative centre of the Split-Dalmatia County.
It is situated on the eastern part of the Gulf of Kastela and the Split Channel. The 178 m Marjan Hill is on the western part of the peninsula and the Kozjak and Mosor ridges separate it from the hinterland.
The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and warm, wet winters. The summer temperatures average at around 36°C, making it one of Europe’s sunniest places.
With a population of around 221,500, Split is an important urban and cultural centre of Dalmatia. Tennis stars Goran Ivanišević and Mario Ančić have placed Split on the global tennis map.

Overall Guide : The Palace of Diocletian, protected by the UNESCO World Heritage List is the city’s favourite monument. The Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments, Treasury of the Split Cathedral and Ethnographic Museum give detailed information about the city’s 1700-year-old history. The summer seasons... more marks the start of the cultural calendar. The Split Summer, a series of open-air concerts, plays and operas, the Melodies of the Croatian Adriatic and the Split Festival of Pop Music are annual events. The Day of St. Doimus, the patron saint of the city is celebrated on 7th May. The Marjan Forest Park gives you a breathtaking view of the city. The carefully maintained park includes promenades, children’s playgrounds, nature paths, solariums and the Split Zoo. Split’s numerous restaurants specialise in Dalmatian cuisine, involving fresh sea food and meat, and white wine, including malvazija, posip, pinot and vugava i kujundzusa.
