Charleston is a charming American city located in the Kanawha County of West Virginia. It is also the state capital and lies at the confluence of the Elk River and the Kanawha river (which is the largest in West Virginia).
The national rail line Amtrak runs services to the city, and the Yeager Airport of the state caters to the air traffic. The 9,300 acre Kanawha State Forest is located in close proximity to the city and is just a short drive away.
Charleston has hot and humid summers with temperatures of around 32°C, while winters are mild with temperatures anywhere from 5°C to below -5°C. Excess snowfall is rare, although summer thunderstorms are quite frequent. The city has well spread precipitation throughout the year.
About 53,000 people reside within the city limits of Charleston.

Get an idea of what Charleston is all about at the West Virginia Dance Festival, usually held at the end of April, and the International Film Festival, which takes place in November and again in April. Treat yourself to traditional mountain art, crafts, music and food at the Memorial Day Vandalia Gathering. Coonskin Park with its pedal boats, golf course and a hiking trail will make an excellent end to your sightseeing.
