Lourdes

Lourdes is situated in the south-west of France at the base of the Pyrenees. The population of this town is only 17,000 but it sees an astounding 5,000,000 visitors every year. It is surrounded by three peaks over 1,000 m in height and dotted with numerous farms.
Lourdes enjoys a slightly extreme climate with warm summers and cold, dry winters. The mountainous region also sees snow and frost in the winter. With temperatures averaging at 20°C, June to September is the best time for travel, but there may be heavy rainfall.
Lourdes was originally a fortified market town. In the late 1800s, a sighting of the Virgin Mary by a village girl, Bernadette, turned it into one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites. Today, the commercial exploitation of the pilgrimage disappoints many visiting devotees.

Overall Guide : The Grotto of Massabielle where the Virgin Mary is supposed to have been sighted by Bernadette is thronged by visitors day and night. La Source, the spring with water which is believed to miraculously cure all diseases, is located near ... Leggi tutto the grotto. Don’t leave Lourdes without a drink of water from the famous spring; it is collected in reservoirs and available in cans or plastic bottles. The Basilica of Pius X with a capacity of 20,000 people is one of the largest churches in the world. The museum dedicated to Ste-Bernadette and her childhood home are especially popular with pilgrims. The terrace of the Lourdes castle, accessible by elevators, gives a good view of the town. The museum in the castle is a good visit for those eager to learn about the history, customs and culture of the area. The towering Pyrenees offer many opportunities for hiking, taking scenic drives to the waterfall in Gavarnie or mountain climbing in Col de Tourmalet.

Overall Guide : First time visitor to Lourdes. It is such a spiritual place to find solace and peace in your heart. To witness the monumental belief people have in Jesus, their faith and commitment to prayer. A wonderful experience for me. Bad ... Leggi tutto weather was expected with rain and being from a tropical country, we braced ourselves for cold weather. Amazingly, the weather was beautiful, warm and sunny till late evening. Mornings were very cold but no one noticed. A truly amazing trip for me. Don't miss the bath, Boly Mill and museum.

Overall Guide : As it is unique, it is impossible to make any meaningful comments. However, I have been there some 40 times and, for me, the miracle is the way so many hundreds of thousands are conveyed to and for, everything sort ... Leggi tutto of happens and one feels safe.

Overall Guide : This town in the French Pyrenees is a holy place of pilgrimage and prayer for Catholics as the Immaculate Conception appeared there 150 years ago. It is a place of internal peace and spirituality so it is not a place ... Leggi tutto to go to for nightlife... unless au flambeau processions are what you are looking for. It ranks 2nd after Paris as the most visited French location. That says enough for its attraction.

Overall Guide : Spiritual place but being destroyed with the lack of quiet respect towards and around the grotto keep the young people partying away from the way to and from the grotto... spiritual fulfilment is affected

Overall Guide : It is a very cultive place with lots of uncharted mountain areas to go hiking and motorcycle riding. It doesnot have much Tourism to offer, but it is home to many Exporting Companies from around the World.
