Playa del Carmen

Located on the East Coast of the Yucatan peninsula, 68 km south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is one of the most attractive destinations of the Mexican Caribbean.
Its permanent population is about 49,000 residents. Once a little fishing village and a backpacker’s undiscovered paradise, Playa is now a popular resort for package tourism and a place to where many Europeans, Americans, Canadians often relocate to start their own tourist businesses.
The fine white-sand beaches, the blue sea of the Caribbean and the subtropical climate with sunny days and an average year-round temperature of 25° are the main reasons this spot is an internationally popular vacation destination.
In Playa del Carmen, there is a huge choice of restaurants and bars, serving generally good-quality hot and spicy Mexican cuisine, but also Asian, Italian and sometimes vegetarian food.

Overall Guide : I find that vacationing here is not the same as living here. When I travel on extended vacations, I prefer to live in a place just like the local people, renting an apartment, not a vacation home. I found the ... Leggi tutto local Mayan population in Playa not to be very friendly to foreigners. The typical one to two week vacation in an overpriced resort like hotel near the beach is not the same experience as living here in a typical apartment that rents for roughly $200/month. Of course if your like most visitors, you'll probably stick to friends that are also visiting. I prefer to live amongst the people to experience something new and to learn about their culture, this was not possible in PDC. Belize or Costa Rica would be a better choice, I didn't have any of these issues there.

Overall Guide : Apart from sunbathing, daytime entertainments include plenty of watersports and activities: windsurfing, kitesurfing, snorkeling and diving in the Great Mayan Reef, which is the second largest coral reef in the world. In the eco-centre of Xcaret you can swim ... Leggi tutto with dolphins and visit the beautiful butterfly sanctuary and the orchid greenhouse. In the area around Playa there are many cenotes, that is fresh-water sinkholes from underwater rivers, that can be explored by scubadivers and snorkelers. Other interesting sights include the Cozumel Island and its Museum, Xel-Ha and its lagoon. The archaeological sites of Tulum are not far away and are definitely worth a visit.
