Tulum is located on the Caribbean Sea coast in the state of Quintana Roo and is a Pre-Columbian walled city of the Maya civilization.
Another modern town having the same name is located nearby called Tulum Pueblo.
The Maya site was previously known as Zama or the City of Dawn. An inscription which dates back to 564 was found at this site and remained occupied through the years of Spanish conquest of Yucatan though it was left as it is in the 16th century.

But now this place expanded and has about 10,000 inhabitants and is the commercial center attracting large number of tourists. The temple of the descending God The Mayan civilization believed in a number of gods and in Tulum they admired the descending god and hence its figures were included as a part on the entrances and structures of the Pyramids. There are numerous depictions and wall paintings of different gods incluing gods of rain, fish, sun and corn.
