China is a relatively safe place for visit. However, a yellow fever certificate is essential for travellers coming from infected areas. There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and a medical check before travelling is recommended. It is advisable to drink bottled or mineral water. Obtaining travel medical insurance before travelling is also recommended.
Medical care, hospitals and doctors are of excellent standards. Western-style medical centres are available in major cities. A majority of these medical centres accept cards.
Serious crime against foreigners is rare. However, extra care should be taken in public places. Bar areas should be visited in company. Theft on public transportation is on the rise. There has also been an increase in problems related to domestic drug abuse in China. Trafficking of women and children is quite common. Protest related bombings have occurred in certain areas.
